# Job Summary
This position acts as the communicator for the Minnesota Zoological Gardens, communicating stories about our conservation efforts, animal care, and the people that work here. As a key member of the Marketing and Communication team, this position will lead the charge in creating and maintaining the overall voice of the Zoo through all marketing and promotional materials. This position will work to increase public awareness and engagement for the Minnesota Zoo and its mission to save wildlife, and contribute to the achievement of attendance, membership and revenue goals.
This position will be required to travel throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area and occasionally Statewide.
**Job Duties:**
* Develop, write and edit a wide variety of digital and print materials for news, media, and promotional, social and marketing
* Develop, plan, implement and actively track media relations strategies that promote the Zoo
* Lead and direct the Zoo-wide communication work group to develop an annual editorial calendar
* Serve as project manager for the creation of photography and videography stories so that the Zoo's diverse offerings are accurately captured and highlighted for communication and promotional purposes.
* Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the Zoo as a viable business partner.
## Minimum Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Communication, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
* Three to six years of PR, media relations and /or communication experience with a successful track record of developing comprehensive, strategic communications across a variety of channels
* Media contacts and proven media coverage in Minnesota metro and statewide markets
* Knowledge of journalistic principles, practices and techniques sufficient to plan, compose and edit various publications and marketing materials
* Knowledge of appropriate style guides and ability to write and edit copy with minimal re-writes for strategic intent, organization, grammar, style, and word usage for a wide range of writing assignments
* Outstanding oral and written communication skills sufficient to present data and recommendations in an organized, concise manner for a variety of audiences
* Knowledge of social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube,) sufficient to assist with creation of strong content including text, video and images
* Knowledge of smart phones (iPhone or Android) sufficient to effectively receive information and manage communications
* Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and generate alignment and agreement on resolutions with varied stakeholders
* Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and details simultaneously, delivering results on-time and on-budget
* Proficient computer software skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) sufficient to collect, organize and analyze data and create graphics and content that effectively conveys the message or story for varied audiences
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
## Preferred Qualifications:
* Master's degree in Integrated Marketing Communication, Public Relations, Media Relations or other related field
* Media contacts and proven media coverage at a regional and national level
## Physical Requirements:
* Ability to sit for periods of time, stand for periods of time, walk considerable distances at times and hear / listen for considerable amounts of time
* Ability to occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds
* Ability to work flexible shifts including evenings and weekends
* Ability to navigate challenging physical spaces
* Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions
* Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer key pad, hang a banner, distribute materials, etc.
* Ability to use an audio headset for two-way communication during programs and events

This position requires successful completion of the following:
